The Legend of Drizzt is a dungeon crawl table top board game for 1 to 5 players by Wizards of the Coast. I recently got together with a group of gamer friends and finally tore into this game. In about a 4 hour period we unboxed the game, read through the directions, and played the game twice. The basic game play is you have a group of adventurers going through your standard caverns trying to defeat the big bad of the adventure you have chosen. Along the way you have to explore the caverns, deal with the monsters you encounter, and gather up the treasure you discover. There are multiple levels of the game, we played the easiest one both times.
With the unboxing of the game we were all impressed with the quality of the game and the game pieces. The cavern tiles and tokens are made of very hard and sturdy cardboard that were well written and had nice art on them. The cards were your standard playing card variety and held up nicely as we not so gently threw them around while playing. And lastly, the player and monster pieces. This were nice quality plastic miniatures with great detail. The player pieces looked great and the monster pieces were nicely done and were not lacking one bit. They ranged in size from a single square spider swarm to a HUGE demonic piece we lovingly called The Balrog (but he wasn’t, thats a different fantasy universe!). I almost took some of these game pieces out and put them on my shelf to display they were so nice.
The game play was easy to learn and pretty simple. The game cards easily explained what to do and when to do it. There were a few cases of haggling over meaning but nothing major. A couple of house rules came into affect but we all had fun. It’s a basic have to role so high on the dice to succeed. The one things we did not realize during our first play through until it was too late is that if anyone dies you all lose the game. In our first play through we all scattered and tried to play like it was a competition against the other players. We all tried to do everything on our own. This play will not work. I died, so did others, we all lost. The next play through we actually employed strategy and stayed together. Coordinating our attacks and equipment use so we were able to actually win the game!
We all loved this game. We want more! I know we will be revisiting Legend of Drizzt again in the near future. This was a fun game for all involved. We had a wide range of people playing from early teens to us old geeks who were raised on the 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I completely endorse this game and feel you will enjoy it as much as we did. It is a fantastic cooperative play board game for all ages. And expect a lot of fun and banter if you play with the right gamers, we certainly did.
