It’s once again time for “Firsts of the Week” where I review the number 1 issues that caught my eye this week. This time we have Steam Wars, Polarity, B.P.R.D. Vampire, The Last of Us: American Dreams, Miss Fury, and Thanos Rising. One thing we are starting this week is doing a rating system like the movies and give examples why.

Steam Wars 1Steam Wars #1
Story & Art: Fred Perry
Published by: Antarctic Press
Price: $3.99
Rating: PG for fantasy violence

We have the classic tale of the resistance fighters facing off against the overwhelming ruling power told in a Steampunk style. In “Steam Wars” we have the resistance troops lead by Duchess Imoen being attacked by the forces of Lord Baron and the Hegemonic Crux as they try to recover the stolen secret the resistance now hold. During the escape we meet up with Captain Lowe, his trained Ursine Engineer Smokey (yes, that would be Smokey the Bear), and their sarcastic upper class robot CL-335 (aka Clees). The group escape from Lord Baron’s main attack but are chased by some of his fighters and are soon shot down in a swamp where they meet and are rescused by Beauregard Baron… A Quantum Dragoon… Just like his father, Lord Baron. East of West

What is “East of West”? There is no simple way to categorized this book. I guess it could be called a futuristic, post-apocalyptic, cyber punk, alternative history, western… does that help? I hope it does because there is so much in this book that should be experienced and enjoyed. This first issue sets things up nicely. It appears many events transpire differently during the American Civil War to change how the country progresses. Throw in what appears to be the Tunguska impact event that strikes in the American west instead of Siberia you end up with seven separate nations instead on one single United States. Throw in a heaping helping of prophetic wisdom from both Christian and Native American prophets that change the cultures a bit and things get even weider. Not to mention the rise of 3 outta the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the future and things get even more interesting. Like where is the 4th Horsemen??? Throw in three individuals with a knack for killing rooms full of heavily armed soldiers, a mystery about their past and who they are, and the assassination of a leader and you have the first issue of “East of West”. (more…)
